Step-by-Step Guide: 30-Minute Macrame Plant Hanger

Let’s begin! The simple design uses basic knots such as Lark’s Head, Square Knot, and Gathering Knot.

Step 1: Attach the Cords to the Ring

You need to fold each of your 8 cords in half. Now you will be having 16 working cords. Attach all of them to the ring using Lark’s Head Knots. Afterwards, slide them tightly together so they form a clean base. It will form the top of your hanger and set the tone for the pattern.

Step 2: Create the Upper Design

Pick groups of four cords and tie Square Knots sitting about 5 or 6 inches down from the ring. There are four groups to make. It forms the top section that adds structure. Repeat another set of Square Knots 2 to 3 inches from the first. If you want to make it more decorative, alternate cords. Then take two cords out of one group and two out of an adjacent group and tie your second row.

Step 3: Knot the Netting for the Pot

Now the fun part of making the cradle! Move 2–3 inches down again and repeat the alternate square knots to form a net-like base. It will eventually hold the plant pot securely. You can repeat 2–3 rows depending on how deep the pot is.

Step 4: Tie Them All Together

About 4–5 inches below your last row of knots, gather all the cords and tie a Gathering Knot. This finishes the base of your hanger and brings the cords together below the pot. Finish the cord instantly.

Step 5: Trim and Insert Pot

Trim the tassel ends evenly, or keep them a little uneven for a more rustic look. Gently insert your pot into the net and hang your macramé beauty from a ceiling hook or curtain rod.
